My family should all remember my grandfather, Carl Andrew Holmes Jr. He passed away in January of 1994, before I was born. Until I started this project, I barely knew anything about him, but I am proud of what he did. Fighting in the Korean War was one of the highlights in his life. Although he had many moments where, "he should have been decorated for his actions", there was one night in particular that really captures his essence. This night, him and his fox hole buddy, got a, "mission to support “C” company" which was really far away. They could only travel at night, so the Chinese could not track them (Frank Lloyd). So, to reach the "C" company, the P. C. had to cross a bridge, that was not even wide enough for the monster, the tracks hung over the side of the bridge. But Carl gladly climbed out, and armed with two flashlights lit the way. The morning when they arrived, the Chinese massed the camp with thousands of troops, and, "Despite artillery, mortar, and small arms fire Carl evacuated the wounded and dead" (Frank Lloyd). The bravery that Carl exhibited that night earned him his combat infantry badge. This badge was a sign of honor among men who had been there. Carl was a quiet man, and nobody knew this until Frank Lloyd, his best friend, shared it in a eulogy at his funeral. Carl was such a, "true bona fide hero" and after learning about this story, I truly believe it. To this day, it is impossible to describe Carl in one word, he just fit so many. Brave, Passionate, Caring, and selfless, just one doesn't work. But the real reason our family should never forget Carl, is because of all of this, and so much more. His actions speak louder than he ever did, and this is what we should remember. A true bona fide hero.

Sanity is ones way of finding and keeping peace of mind.
Humans are not built to go through the stress that we do.
Reading Reminders:
-Connect: I connect to this because I have felt lonely before, as he describes in some parts of the song. -Question: Why did he sing/write this song? Why did he feel this way? Is there somethings he is not telling us? -Predict: I think that the narrator grows up and gets the chance to see his kids, his grandchildren and experiences a full life. -Interpret: The author is trying to tell me that even if times are rough things will get better and that life is full of chances, it just matters what you choose to place your bets on. -Extend: From this song, I have learned that even if I feel down about something, to never give up because I am unstoppable. -Challenge: I think that the author put out a good message with the song, so I agree with it entirely. This is because he puts himself out there so we can sympathize, and feel better about ourselves. Although, I think the author/singer/Narrator should have added some successes that he had into the song as well. Life List Ideas: -Love/ Relationships -Faith -Pride -Health -Truth -Fear of the unknown -Self Image -Science/ Technology -Mortality -Individual vs. Society -Freedom -Bias -Home (lack of it) -Hope -Cause and Effect -Death One Chunk: What kind of relationship does the narrator have with his parents? Use ONE quality CD to prove your answer. The narrator has a very dysfunctional relationship with his parents. In his house, the narrator, "Never meant to upset...my parents" (Francis). He hid behind his walls, scared to face his parents wraith. The arguments and constant squabbles caused his relationship with his parents to turn sour. |
